Can't you pause the mplayer while you want to make the screen shot?

'p' will pause, pressing it 2nd time the video will continue
In GNOME you should be able to take a screenshot by pressing Alt-PrintScrn
while the mplayer window is active then.
It is using 'gnome-panel-screenshot -window' then. Without Alt it takes a
shot of whole visible workspace.
