[MPlayer-users] taking screenshot of mplayer video (using xv,x11& sdl)

It's probably not the most elegant way of doing it, but if you use mplayer 
with the OpenGL output driver (mplayer -vo gl) you just have to pause the 
movie in the frame you want and then capture the mplayer window. You can do 
that with "import blabla.jpg" and then clicking on the movie window. You can 
also save in other formats changing the file extension (see import manual).
