  Well, it occurred to me right after I posted the configure.log error 
  that config.h is created by running configure. (Duh! :)) 

  One way around it is to just run configure, then make distclean, then run
  configure again. For some reason, config.h isn't zapped by the
  distclean (which I think it usually is), and it enables the internal
  libfaad. Weird, but if anybody else has the problem, it's a quick fix.
