I've made another observation.

I tried to rip -sid 4 and -sid 5 to vobsub format from the DVD.

The .idx file generated is included below.  Sadly I can't use the output to 
show the subtitles.  The interesting thing though is that the timestamps 
shown correspond perfectly to where the subtitles *should* be.  But the 
subtitles themselves don't seem to be viewable.

So mplayer seems to know that they are there in *some* capacity.  But is 
unable to display them.

Can anyone give me any ideas on what next to try?
