Ok. I removed teh codecs.conf and I have no problem encoding avi/mpeg files.
I cannot however encode mythtv nuv files that have been transcoded to MPEG4
I get the following output.

mencoder -ovc copy -oac copy 1004_20030922130000_20030922133000.nuv -o
temp.avi

Remove your old codecs.conf file from /root/.mplayer, it's not needed
anymore. MPlayer and MEncoder use an internal copy of codecs.conf
This will remove the message, but won't solve your problem.

BTW if you run MPlayer/MEncoder as root, be sure you know what you're
doing!

Codecs.conf in your home directory is too old and will be ignored

MEncoder will use its own internal copy of codecs.conf
