No, I'd suggest:
$ grep DVD /var/log/dmesg
hdd: SAMSUNG DVD-ROM SD-606, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
hdd: ATAPI 32X DVD-ROM drive, 512kB Cache, DMA
$ ln -s /dev/hdd /dev/dvd
