When starting mplayer with "-vo xv" (and without "-fstype -fullscreen") 
I have the problem described above with the fullscreen mode. Using "-vo 
sdl" results in an error (the resolution of my monitor is changed and 
MPlayer/KDE freezes). That is why I think that xv has been used by 
default. ;-)
