You could make a simple script that wouldn't require any user
intervention at all.  

In other words, it could run mplayer with cropdetect, grab the output
value, pass that to mencoder, change the -vf options to crop and/or
scale it, etc.  And most importantly, it would maintain the dimentions
as multiples of 16, without you having to tweak the vaules manually.

The way you do it currently, you may end up with a height that is not a
multiple of 16, because "-2" doesn't check for that.
