You're game! I have seen the mplayer boys defend ffmpeg quite strongly 
:-). My experience is that, without special filters at least, everything 
to do with ffmpeg is at least as good a quality and quite a bit faster. 
Xvid 1.0 was supposed to be the end of all competition but I didn't 
notice any improvement over ffmpeg. In any case, I looked at a few early 
divx converted films the other day and wow! What strides have been made, 
it was horrible compared with the beautiful quality of modern ffmpeg and 
xvid.

ps. remember that both are open source, and if there are any techniques 
that really improve performance then often the concept can be translated 
from one project to another, if not actual code.
