[MPlayer-users] using mplayer or mencoder to .asf -> .mp3

I want to use mplayer or mencoder to record live .asf streams to .mp3. 
This used to be possible with both but I cannot get the newest version
to do it.  I get the following error:

$mencoder http://huntsville.wm.radioalliance.net/wvnn.asf -o foo.mp3
...
ASF file format detected.
Video stream is mandatory!
Exiting...

It used to be possible with this but this is no longer supported
apparently:
$ mplayer foo.asf -vo null -oac pcm -oafile foo.wav

I know I have done it before with mencoder also.  Anyone?
