Why? Don't just believe someone's words or homepages, test it yourself.

What about middle ones? ;)
IMHO it's useless. A lot of codecs just can't be compared; there are
closed source or even specification codecs, some can't be played back or
encoded in linux and other free os'es, some are good but not widely
spreaded; some aren't optimized (like reference encoder for h.264).
