[MPlayer-users] cheap video card recommendation to replace ATI, or help making it work better

JQ mplayer at teahead.net

i'm pretty close to buying a graphics card for this machine which is
only for watching/projecting movies and playing music.
i think the movies i'm trying to play are pretty high quality, too (see
mplayer output)
cheapness is a factor, and also it has to be PCI (the machine is a dell
optiplex PII 400Mhz) which has an ATI Rage Pro built in but mplayer
seems sluggish on it.

I'm thinking of a NVidia GeForce2 based card w/64MB of RAM,
or of a slightly cheaper ATI RADEON 7000 w/32MB RAM.

Which chipset does mplayer work best with (particularly for DivX
DEcoding-I use a Mac G4 for encoding:), or should I keep trying to tweak
what I have...?

mplayer output, current XFree86Conf, and dmesg follow....

thanks for sharing your experience and any tips as I find my way into
this awesome, versatile, application!!!

Chon

          ************************************************

Possible reasons, problems, workarounds:
- Most common: broken/buggy _audio_ driver
 - Try -ao sdl or use ALSA 0.5 or the OSS emulation of ALSA 0.9.
 - Experiment with different values for -autosync, 30 is a good start.
- Slow video output
 - Try a different -vo driver (-vo help for a list) or try -framedrop!
- Slow CPU
 - Don't try to play a big DVD/DivX on a slow CPU! Try -hardframedrop.
- Broken file
 - Try various combinations of -nobps -ni -forceidx -mc 0.
- Slow media (NFS/SMB mounts, DVD, VCD etc)
 - Try -cache 8192.
- Are you using -cache to play a non-interleaved AVI file?
 - Try -nocache.
Read DOCS/video.html and DOCS/sound.html for tuning/speedup tips.
If none of this helps you, read DOCS/bugreports.html.
