In my experience, my DVD-ROM drive honors the -E flag better than my 
CD-RW drive... Even in automatic mode (-E 0), it's pretty silent by 
default when watching a movie. A bit slow to react on transfer demand, 
though, so it might not spin up to faster speed if I for example 
suddenly want to mplayer -dumpstream the movie :-)
