DMA for harddisk? Yes.
unmask, no. Switching into umask (hdparm -u1) did not solve it.

No, no other args, just a filename to play.

So what about mpg123 (uses /dev/dsp0) and ogg123 (dsp0 or alsapcmstuff) which
does not skip at all?

Using -cache <anynumber> seems to bypass this issue.
