Going up or down by 10 or 20 is useless until you know that the place
you're seeking to is not past the end of the movie!

Okay. I'm assuming that 59463 is not past the end of the movie - that it
is, indeed, the point at which the other file left off.

It is likely that -ss 59463 *does not take you to 59463*. It most likely
takes you to somewhere much farther into the file. This is due to either
limitations of the MPEG format or a design bug in MPlayer (as I
understand it it's arguable either way). If the place to which it takes
you is *past* the end of the file, when the program starts it will first
seek to that place, then realize that there's nothing left to play, and
finally quit. This is what I think is happening.

If you subtract a *lot* from the -ss value (I suggested units of 1000),
you can eventually find a value which does *not* seek past the end of
the file; from there, you can add and subtract various smaller amounts
until you get one which seeks to 59463, which is where you want to go.

Is that any more clear?
