do you have the windoze divx codecs installed?

I remember this happened for me too with the old version of mencoder, I know
one of my friends fixed some timing issue a while back... I'd suggest you try
the real version of mencoder instead of the old one-- probably would fix your
problem right there.  He also said that a lot of the problems occurred because
of three pass encoding, you might try two pass instead.  Or update your
mencoder =)

try -ofps 23.976, most NTSC DVD's need this because it's stored at a goofy frame rate (Section 7.2 of the documentation).

If you're new, you might want to try using the latest version of mencoder and
acidrip, I've found it to be a nice program to calculate bitrates and things
for me without a calculator.  Just make sure to add trell, v4mv, and mbd=2
(at least) to the lavcoptions section and it should work quite well... even
automatically handles getting cropping information and scaling so that it
keeps the right aspect ratio.
