1. use the newest CVS release

2. try using a larger cache value
my default cache size used is 1024 (one meg)

if you wanted it in wav format you could do this
(requires 176400 bytes per second or for this file around 682 Megs)

mplayer -ao pcm -aofile birdmaster.wav 
"rtsp://archive.wfmu.org/archive/HP/hp030824.rm?start=1:1:48&end=2:9:27"

Note: the title portion in this url is not required 

tested and over an hour later got
 output of issue at very end of file selection.
