After investigating the problem, I found out the reason for crashes was 
upgrading KDE (and thus the arts sound server) and not the X server. I 
switched to oss sound output instead of arts and the crashes seem to be 
no more. Probably recompiling mplayer with the new arts libs will let me 
use arts again, but I haven't tried that yet.
