Yes, this particular bug was triggered at the very end of encodes. As
for the fourcc, perhaps your gui just doesn't show you the output of
mencoder unless there's a problem, and normally you don't see the fourcc
line. The GUI wrapper shouldn't be forcing a fourcc of XVID for
libavcodec encodes; I don't know why it's doing that.

You must be using the GUI from:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/mplayerosx
The 0.7.7 is the mplayerosx version and not the actual version of
mencoder. From the download section, that looks like 0.90rc2, which is
very very old. You really want a newer version (at least 1.0rc3) to make
good encodes.
I'm afraid I can't really help you with mac stuff. Perhaps a mac person
will take up this thread and give you a hand. Otherwise, you'll have to
try things yourself and search google. The mplayer documentation has
detailed instructions for compiling from source, but only a very small
section on OS X. Anyway, try reading the docs and compiling the source
(either CVS or 1.0rc3) and see if you have any success.

No problem, we all have to start somewhere. Mplayer/mencoder isn't
necessarily a difficult program to learn, it's just that there are a
many ways to use it.
