You're right, it changed! At first it was meant to be a frontend to
mplayer, then libxine was integrated. From here:
http://www.nongnu.org/lumiere/news.html you can read:
"This is it, support for libxine AND mplayer!"

I just reinstalled it to check, and mplayer is still one of the video
backends of choice.
