Could a simple workaround be using ffmpeg to decode the mpeg1/2 video? "-vfm 
ffmpeg," (note the comma) should do the job, AFAIR. I've had that in 
my /etc/mplayer/mplayer.conf for some time now, never had mpeg1/2 problems :)
I switched to ffmpeg for mpeg1/2 when libmpeg2 played some clip wrong or 
something like that.
