I managed to read posts from at least two different users having
problems with the new -ao alsa (which became -ao alsa1x shortly
after the release of the alsa 1.X series) output. For me
reverting to the old alsa1x output (dev-CVS-040510-08:43 works
OK) fixed the problems.
