Please don't, at least not until there's some solid and - if not
necessarily intuitive - at least not difficult-to-set-up-reliably
alternate way of getting equally high-quality software volume control.

I've seen it implied that such a thing already exists (and I still
haven't gotten around to testing the little patch Reimar sent for me to
use as a starting point... I'll probably do that next, unless I decide
that I'm *far* too short on sleep right now), but nothing I've tried has
worked acceptably.

When such a thing does exist and Works For Me, I almost certainly will
not hesitate to agree to (finally) removing the deprecated code.
