[MPlayer-users] autodetect failing with 1.0pre7 Debian compile

Can anyone suggest why configuring MPlayer 1.0pre7 might be failing to 
detect the alsa environment on my Debian system? Kernel 2.6.11.6 with 
native alsa support, plus an apt-get for alsa-utils. The configuration 
defaults to OSS sound and I get no audio from streams that 1.0pre6 
handled just fine.

PS: Oh yes, the "fakeroot" shortcut failed with a missing "dh_testdir", 
so I did the usual ./configure, make, and make install.
