Sounds like this is a problem far beyond MPlayer. Try contacting the 
XFree86 guys. You said this happened in WinXP too, though? Well, might 
be a problem with your video card or monitor. If this is a CRT, there 
should be some on-board controls to play with the pin-cushion effect.
