No, it doesn't - I wrote the above based on 'ffmpeg -formats', which
does mention Matroska, but since then I've tested with both -of lavf and
ffmpeg itself and failed to output to MKV.

I thought that 'ffmpeg -formats' was specifically to let people know
what they could use for output... but apparently I was mistaken.
