It looks in $HOME when there's no history.

Remove the history files. To do that automatically, run gmplayer from within
a wrapper script. I.e.,

#!/bin/sh
gmplayer $@
rm ~/.mplayer/gui.history ~/.mplayer/gui.pl ~/.mplayer/gui.url
