I think I have it right now: I followed your instructions and those on
mplayerhq.hu, downloaded mplayerCVS and ffmpegCVS source code, compiled
without a hitch, and downloaded and installed fonts per the README.
Overall, mplayer runs fine. Mencoder also runs fine after switching
from -oac mp3lame to -oac lavc. However, the subtitle problem remains:
mplayer will not display subtitles until playback is "rewound" using the
left arrow key. Mencoder does not capture subtitles from this dvd.
Perhaps mencoder can be coaxed into capturing subtitles by some poking
equivalent to the left arrow key under mplayer? In case it is helpful,
below is the output of mplayer while playing this dvd. At the very end
of playback I hit the left arrow key, and subtitles appeared.
