[MPlayer-users] Using a Joystick?

Hello,
 
I'd like to use my joystick in mplayer but haven't been able to get it to
work. 
 
I've tried "mplayer -vo xv -input js-dev=/dev/js0 somefile.avi" but the
joystick doesn't do anything.  The joystick at /dev/js0 is working in other
programs.
 
I apologize if this is explicitly spelled out in the man page, but I did
honestly look.
 
Do I need a joystickrc file somewhere or am I perhaps missing something
else?  Is joystick usage completely independent of lirc?
