With immediatemode=1, mencoder will not capture sound. If it doesn't
work when you leave it off, it's most likely that you have your
soundcard's capture device set incorrectly (or unset). Try aumix or
alsamixer to set it. With alsa, you need both Line and Capture set as
capture devices (and the volume above 0).
Sound works with playback programs, because they don't have to capture
the sound, they just turn on the TV card, and let your soundcard forward
the sound to your speakers.
