You are confusing containers and codecs. mkv is a container like avi
whereas divx is a codec like mpeg2 (actually it is a variety of mpeg4).

Your mkv may already contain divx. It is unlikely that the container is
the bottleneck. You should first optimize your setup. Compile mplayer
yourself making sure it is built for your CPU. Set your RTC so mplayer
can use it. Then check you have DMA switched on for your drive. Check
your MTRR settings. Use a fast vo like xv or xvidix.

If it is still too slow post the full output of mplayer -v
