mpeg aspect can be 4/3, 16/9, 2.21 or 1 (no aspect)
if the aspect value specified with -lavcopts aspect=n
is another value, the closest match between 1, 4/3, 16/9, 2.21
is choosen. This is for 1.0pre6 and older version.
I haven't check with the new muxer. Nico?

I'm not 100% sure, but I think that 
only 16/9 DVD are played correctly by hardware DVD players.
VCD/SVCD are always played as 4/3
