I'm running into the same problem; has any progress been made on this?
I'm using 1.0 pre6 from the Gentoo x86 ebuild. If I close mplayer's X
window, it receives a broken pipe signal. The signal apparently goes
unhandled, and the process terminates abnormally. More seriously, it
leaves a background process running indefinitely, which I have to look
for and kill manually (it does respond to kill -TERM).

It seems others are having the same problem, although I can't find
anything other than Olivier's two-year-old message in the
mplayer-users archive (maybe I missed something?); see this thread at
the Gentoo forums:

Thanks in advance,
