[MPlayer-users] Question on DivX versions...

Hello!

I got some movies encoded with "DIVX503 Build1031q", as mplayer tells me.

While my XINE player immediately crashes when I start it with _some_ of this
files, mplayer is able to play them.

I tried to use avidemux to cut away the first frame and store the rest (to
force a new AVI header), but the result was very surprising, XINE played the
file with a very choppy sound, where audio was in double speed.

So I finally decided to re-rip this strange DivX5 files with mencoder into
DivX4, and now XINE can play them without problems. At least, the short sample
was fine, now I am converting the full file.

My question: What are the differences between DivX4 and DivX5 that make a XINE
crash? I always thought that DivX is backwards compatible! If someone could,
please, explain?
