mplayer 1.0pre7

I'm having a devil of a time getting mplayer -vo xv working on my 
system.  It has an ATI Radeon Mobility M7 (7500) LW.  Sound is ok but 
the screen is blank.  I can tell something is trying to be drawn because 
the mouse will vanish if I leave it (and will of course reappear if I 
jiggle it - and disappear again).

-vo x11 works, but I want to get xv working.  xvideo extensions are 
installed, xvinfo says the support is present, and I'm out of things to 
try (other than diving into the code ...).

Appended is a session log, followed by a section of /var/log/Xorg.0.log.
If anyone has any suggestions of what to try, I'd be grateful.
