If the problem is local to mplayer you might try compiling the CVS. It 
has many fixes to bugs that were in the version your using. The audio 
is decoding fine if you can in fact hear it. It is just the level of 
the audio has gotten set really low. My personal first guess without 
having looked at the output is that maybe some program added something 
to the mplayer config files. Check ~/.mplayer/config for anything to 
change audio volume.
