You may have a bad dvd on which your dvd reader chokes. Try to dump
the dvd track with:
mplayer dvd://1 -dumpstream -dumpfile movie.vob
and then replace "mencoder dvd://1 xx" with "mencoder movie.vob xx"
You may also wanna speed-up the encoding with appending "turbo" to the
encoding options of lavc.
Also, please remember that the time it takes to encode a video is
directly related to the total duration of the movie. If a movie is
long, so is the encoding.
