Ah, I see what you mean. Now, you will notice that 640x352 is a
widescreen format. If you try the same on a 4:3 format video, you get
the following (use mplayer -v):
[...]
VIDEO:  MPEG1  352x240  (aspect 12)  29.970 fps  1150.0 kbps (143.8 kbyte/s)
[...]
[xvidix] window properties: pos: 625x492, size: 264x264
[...]

So the video is scaled up a bit in vertical direction, but scaled down a
lot in horizontal direction.
