It should play rm files by default with no extra options required to configure,
but it helps to have the binary codecs installed first.

Try checking /usr/local/etc/mplayer for any old codecs.conf files,
input.conf or similar left behind. Then check your ~/.mplayer for
the same.

So, I copied the downloaded the latest skin file and installed all the components into a subdirectory named default. That stopped the error message, but gmplayer doesn't actually play anything. When I start gmplayer and include a .rm file on the command line, nothing happens (no gui opens up). The last line that displays on the console is:

It might be blocking trying to open the audio output. You could try do the
same for the GUI, delete ~/.mplayer/gui.conf to get default settings again.

Perhaps make a backup of it first.

Following your suggestions, I looked at the two locations. Both /usr/local/etc/mplayer and ~/.mplayer only had codecs.conf.old in them. So I am assuming that running 'make install' renamed codecs.conf

Running mplayer from the command line, it seems to work, minus keyboard control. Audio and video both work. Yet, a number of messages are produced complaining about audio and video problems:

It seems there is no Xvideo support for your video card available.
Run 'xvinfo' to verify its Xv support and read DOCS/HTML/en/video.html#xv!
See 'mplayer -vo help' for other (non-xv) video out drivers. Try -vo x11

I ran xvinfo and received this:

Since codecs.conf is not present in either location, am I supposed to create that file?
