It's not necessary to restart the X server...  Just run
mplayer-1.0pre6 to re-set XV to the expected values :-)

This same change in pre7 is a problem in just about every other XV
program...  avidemux, xawtv,

Not a bug per-se, but it is an annoying change that screws-up absolutely
every other program that uses XV.  eg. ogle  xawtv  avidemux  etc.
