Thanks, this response is very helpful. Unfortunately I don't have 3D
accleration enabled -- looks like I need a different driver ("fglrx") for
that. Which means recompiling my kernel again (sigh).

That's probably because the card has only one video overlay and it's
assigned to LCD output. It's probably possible to reassign it to CRT.
As a workaround, try -vo gl if you have 3D acceleration enabled.
