You're right of course. I rebuilt for 32-bits from the same CVS tree, and
found the same problem. However my previous 32-bit build works fine! It
reports itself as:

MPlayer dev-CVS-050409-05:00-3.3.3 (C) 2000-2005 MPlayer Team

(which, judging by the time, looks like a snapshot release) and the status
line for my example file looks like:

A:30001.6 V:30001.6 A-V: 0.001 ct: -0.349 238/238 6% 0% 0.5% 0 0

And of course the A/V sync is fine. So perhaps I can get a working 64-bit
player by checking out an older CVS state?

(Aside: 'make clean' does not do a sufficiently good job to allow a 32-bit
build to be done after a previous 64-bit build on the same tree. You also
need to remove *.so */*.a */*.o */*.so */*/*.so */*/*.o */*/*.a and
codec-cfg)
