[MPlayer-users] Movies stretched vertically in portrait mode

When I put my video card in portrait mode, so that my resolution is 1024 (W) 
X 1280 (H), MPlayer stretches movies vertically, and I have to use 
-monitoraspect 1024:1280 to correct it.

Is this a bug or a feature?

System Configuration:

Windows XP SP2
ATI Radeon 9200 Celestica Gold Edition, Catalyst 5.11 drivers.
MPlayer dev-CVS-060415-07:34-3.4.2 (not that it matters. The earliest 
version I can find on my system is  dev-CVS-051020-17:39-3.4.2, and it does 
the same thing.)
