You did not state you MPlayer version. For pre7 you need bio2jack, and
jack support has some bugs.
If using CVS, you need (can't guarantee the paths are correct though)
/usr/include/jack/jack.h
/usr/lib/libjack.so

Having pkg-config installed might help as well.

I think BLFS describes setting up MPlayer including Jack, but maybe I'm
wring...

How about just giving us that part (or even all of) the log, instead of
leaving us guessing? :-P

Well, I'd say the uses of jack with MPlayer are the same as the uses of
jack with any application. Since I don't really use it, the only one I
know of is working around crappy soundcards that can not do hardware
mixing in a (possibly) slightly saner way than alsa dmix.
