Well, it depends on the distro you're using. If you're using Debian,
or a Debian derivitive (Knoppix, Xebian, Ubuntu, DSL, for example)
just use apt-get install x11-dev or whatever the package is called
(apt-cache search x11 will list off all X11 packages). Gentoo (I
think it's Gentoo) uses yum, and has a very similar syntax (as I
understand it, I might be wrong) to apt.
AS to WHERE they would be, I'd offer as suggestion as to where to
check, but Mac OS X keeps its X11 data stored in places that are far
to dissimilar to Linux's locations.
