Slow and bad probably referred to the first few divx4 versions.

mplayer still can't even read open-dml AVI files (don't forget that 
AVI-Mux GUI's low overhead style open-dml files are just a special 
type of open-dml that is totally spec compliant) as specified in 
1996... you simply can't expect some people to catch up with time as 
time goes on. It's a waste of time.

Once a guy asked me why his liteon cd writer didn't work with 
cdrecord, so I told him to use -raw96r. He said cdrecord didn't accept 
the command. When I told him to update cdrecord, he answered "but i've 
updated it only 2 years ago!?". Exactly that is the mentality you are 
trying to break...
