OSX seems to have a higher overhead when it comes to video out
drivers, task switch, stuff like that.

On OSX, make sure you are using -ao macosx and -vo macosx
These are the drivers that are supposed to have the lowest overhead on osx.

Other than that, there aren't any other way that I know of to make osx faster.
