[MPlayer-users] scrolling text on video

Hello,

I'd like to know if it would be possible to play a video and overlap 
another layer with some text and/or icons (scrolling or not) like you 
can see on TV for informational messages (stock options, breaking news, 
weather forecast, etc...).
I thought about using OSD, but I never really used this and I'm not sure 
about the capabilities.

I'd like to be able to have a playlist playing videos (a customized 
playlist engine I've developped) that could insert some info at a 
certain timing.

I'm using mplayer as a slave (-slave -idle).

Maybe mplayer won't do it. But maybe someone out here knows an other 
application that could do that ? (no windows apps please, command line 
based).
