[MPlayer-users] problem mixing audio and video to AVI

Is there a trick to mixing an MPEG4 AVI video (with no sound)
and an MP3 audio file? When I try to do this mencoder hangs at 0%
and takes 98% of CPU. Only a 10268 byte header gets writen to the final.avi.
    mencoder -oac copy -ovc copy -o final.avi -audiofile audio.mp3 video.avi

This seems pretty basic. Is there anything I can do to where mencoder
is getting lost?
