Thanks! The SVN version did the trick.
Apparently the v1.0pre7try2 release of MPlayer has a problem
mixing mpeg4 video and mp3 audio together into an AVI container.
It took me a bit of time to find the SVN repository because
it was not yet indexed on the main mplayer site.
